Flathead Valley, Kalispell and Whitefish
Flathead Valley lies just west of the Continental Divide in the northwestern part of Montana in the midst of the Swan, Salish, Whitefish, and Mission ranges. One of the area’s special attributes is its pristine environment which features one of the purest freshwater lakes in the world, Flathead Lake. Though known for its excellent winter recreational activities, Flathead Valley has a moderate climate with winter temperatures in the 20’s and 30’s and the summer temperatures ranging from 70s to low 90s. Recreational activities include camping, hiking, biking, horseback riding, golf, rafting, fishing, and of course, skiing, snowmobiling and snowboarding. Some, if not all of these activities can be found within the cities of Flathead County and several venues such as Glacier National Park, Flathead Lake, Flathead National Forest, and several wilderness areas.
The cities within the Flathead Valley include Kalispell, MT (the largest city in the Valley) where the past and present come together in a perfect blend to form the hub of the Valley. Whitefish, MT is a scenic resort town located at the base of Big Mountain Ski and Summer Resort and offers plenty of opportunities for shopping and dining, too. Recently Whitefish has begun boasting of its arts community as well.
Other communities stand out in their own right with their individual “must-see” features. Columbia Falls is called the Gateway to Glacier National Park. Bigfork’s “Village by the Bay” attracts theatergoers and art-lovers with galleries and specialty shops. Polson, which lies on the southern shores of Flathead Lake, invites people to enjoy the clear water.
