Kalispell MT Real Estate

Kalispell MT History

Located in the heart of the majestic Rocky Mountains in northwestern Montana, about an hour south of the Canadian border, is Kalispell, MT.  The city was originally founded in 1887 as Demersville.  But, it became a ghost town when the Great Northern Railroad chose another site as its stopping point.  However, Kalispell was reborn when the first railroad car pulled into town on New Year's Day, 1892. The railroad brought tourists and businessmen to Kalispell and over the next several years it became a booming city of industry, farming, sawmills, and flour mills.

Kalispell is the seventh largest city in Montana and the County Seat of Flathead County.  The city experienced 20% growth during the decade of the 1990s; and while the nation's economy has slowed, Kalispell’s economic growth continues.  Kalispell presently is home to an estimated 34,000 residents, but the city provides services to 125,000 residents from the surrounding area.

Attractions

Conveniently located a short drive from Flathead Lake, Whitefish Mountain Ski Resort, and Glacier National Park, Kalispell offers plenty of outdoor activities to visitors as well as residents.  Flathead Lake is the largest natural freshwater lake west of the Mississippi and is the one of the cleanest lakes in the world.

About a half hour south of Flathead Lake is Glacier National Park, which borders Canada and contains 2 mountain ranges.  Kalispell, MT is the closest residential area to the National Park. The National Park has over 130 named lakes, over 1,000 different plant species, and hundreds of animal species. A pure ecosystem, Glacier National Park covers over 1,584 square miles of land.  Hiking, fishing, snowmobiling, and cross-country skiing are popular recreation activities in permitted areas of the park.

For shopping enthusiasts, Kalispell offers everything from a quaint historic downtown district with unique shops, eateries, and fine dining, to major national retailers.

Education

The city of Kalispell is served by Kalispell Public School District 5 with 12 public schools, including an education center and an alternative school. Within 40 miles of the city, there are also two colleges:  Flathead Valley Community College in Flathead County and Salish Kootenai College, a private school in Lake County.
