Kalispell MT History
Located in the heart of the majestic Rocky Mountains in northwestern Montana, about an hour south of the Canadian border, is Kalispell, MT. The city was originally founded in 1887 as Demersville. But, it became a ghost town when the Great Northern Railroad chose another site as its stopping point. However, Kalispell was reborn when the first railroad car pulled into town on New Year's Day, 1892. The railroad brought tourists and businessmen to Kalispell and over the next several years it became a booming city of industry, farming, sawmills, and flour mills.
Kalispell is the seventh largest city in Montana and the County Seat of Flathead County. The city experienced 20% growth during the decade of the 1990s; and while the nation's economy has slowed, Kalispell’s economic growth continues. Kalispell presently is home to an estimated 34,000 residents, but the city provides services to 125,000 residents from the surrounding area.
