General Information About Whitefish MT

Whitefish, MT is one of three cities in Flathead County which borders Canada.  Whitefish bills itself as Montana's Outdoor Recreation Playground.  The city is nestled against Big Mountain (recently renamed Whitefish Mountain) and the magnificent peaks of Glacier National Park at an elevation of over 3,000 feet.  Its climate offers four distinct seasons with a summer average of 80 degrees and with the winter months averaging in the low 20s.  Whitefish is home to the Whitefish Mountain Resort, a popular ski resort which is second in size to Big Sky Resort. There is plenty of snowfall to accommodate skiing, snowmobiling, and snowboarding on 3,000 acres offering varying degrees of difficulty. 

The warmer months are excellent for a variety of outdoor activities like horseback riding, hiking, camping, fishing, boating, baseball, softball, tennis, and golfers can enjoy over a dozen championship and amateur golf courses in the area. Of course, there are plenty of other activities to enjoy all year round, such as casual dining in cafés and fine dining in restaurants, shopping in antique galleries, specialty boutiques, and unique shops.  And then you can top off your day by spending the evening enjoying live music performances or live theatre in town. There’s always something going on, and the community is seasonally provided with activities brochures, letting residents know about upcoming events, festivals, and recreation courses.

Education

Whitefish School District operates the public schools in Whitefish with 1,800 students enrolled in four schools, grades K-4 elementary school, grades 5-8 middle school, grades 9-12 high school, and an independent high school which provides a nontraditional education for grades 10-12.  The District also provides adult education. Colleges in the area include the Flathead Valley Community College and Salish Kootenai College which is a private school nearby in Lake County.
